Did the BCS rankings get the National Championship Game right? Click to read what Fletch and Mark have to say.
The Gospel according to Fletch:
In the minds of many the BCS is just a bunch of BS, especially if you live in Texas, or for a few months until they lost to a suprising Iowa team Pennsylvania. Of the five BCS games, three of them, including the championship game, are games that anyone would pay money to watch. Of those teams playing, the only one I have a problem with is USC, who I feel got in due to its history and not record this year. The only other game that is questionable is the Orange Bowl, but in this state who really cares, as it means two Ohio Schools are playing in Prime Time as the Bearcats from Cincinnati get the nod to play Virginia Tech. " Obviously the aim of the BCS arrangement is to match No. 1 and No. 2 as a part of the Bowl system and to create other Bowl game matchups between competitive teams that are going to be appealing to the college football fan, and appropriate of what happened during the regular season," said commissioner John Swofford. " I think that has been accomplished this year. People have their opinions and concerns. A lot of times that helps to improve the end result in the system itself. I think people should be free to express their opinions and concerns."
So in the aspect of did they get it right this year, I would have to say yes. Does it have its flaws, ah-huh, but the two best teams are playing for the National Championship game and it is the game that everybody outside of the state of Texas wanted to see. First off where can you find the last two Heisman trophy winners in one contest? It's been a long time since that has occurred and it will be fun to see who rises to the occasion. The there is our own Urban Meyer, coaching in his 100th game as head coach. He is 82-17 (.828) and already has won a national championship, A win here puts him to legendary status. But the same can be said of Oklahoma's Bob Stoops another Ohio boy, who boasts a 109-23 (.826) slate and also has a national championship to his name. It will be an offensive genius in Meyer against a record setting offense in Oklahoma, and also to add to the aura of the game, the two schools have never played each other adding to the mystery. For once the BCS got it right. Would I have been upset if Ohio State was in Texas shoes?, To steal a phrase from Sarah Palin, You betcha, but then again I would have to look back at what the Buckeyes did in the previous two games, and that alone would give credence to the fact they were omitted. A third consecutive blowout on National television would not do the BCS well and with advertising dollars drying up, it could have had a big impact on future games.

Mark's thought:
The BCS system is completely worthless. Weather or not I agree with the match-up between Florida and Oklahoma is really irrelevant because I don’t agree with the BCS rankings at all. Not only is this game wrong, but so are the rest of the big bowl games.
Aren’t the Bowl Games supposed to feature the top teams in the league? Why isn’t #3 playing #4? And #5 playing #6? And so on? It makes absolutely no sense as to why the best teams are not matching up against the other top teams in the nation.
As much as I like watching the Buckeyes, I don’t think they deserve to be in the Fiesta Bowl. If it is such a big time bowl game, it should feature two big time schools and this year I wouldn’t consider the Buckeyes to be a big time school. Their reputation supersedes their ability to play football this season. This game should be Texas vs. Alabama, but that too would be wrong. I really think Texas should be the team in the National Championship game. They beat Oklahoma. So in reality this game should probably be between Alabama and Oklahoma, but even that situation doesn’t quite sit well with me. What about USC? Aren’t they deserving of a bigger bowl game? I just don’t understand how USC cannot be considered for the Fiesta Bowl or the National Championship. They lost early in the year and never worked their back to the top. How did that happen? Didn’t Florida lose early in the year and work their way back up to the number 2 spot in the rankings to now play in the National Champions? There are far too many questions that have no good answer to justify that the BCS is a good system.
NCAA football needs to adopt a playoff system. It’s the only solution and it’s fair. It’s win or go home. There would be no question that that the teams in the National Championship were correct. The computer rankings could still play a part in playoff match-ups, but wouldn’t be the determining factor of who should play for the National Championship. The current system leaves doubt in the minds of football fans across the nation.
As for the game itself, I do think Florida should be playing in the National Championship. Even with a playoff system, I believe Florida would still be headed there. But there’s no way of knowing that for sure because Florida was assigned to this game. I don’t think they should be playing Oklahoma. I think the BCS got that wrong. I hear so many arguments that the BCS system works and places all the value on the season itself. If the season serves as a playoff, shouldn’t Texas be in the National Championship? Didn’t Oklahoma lose to Texas? What about Texas Tech? I know they lost to Oklahoma, but they beat Texas, who defeated Oklahoma. It’s a never ending argument. I don’t know how anyone could say that Oklahoma is any better than USC, Texas Tech, Texas, Alabama or Penn State. They are all 1 loss teams and should have had the opportunity to play for the National Championship. And what about poor Utah? They didn’t lose at all this season. Some could argue that their schedule was weak, but why should that matter. Utah was 12-0 and played through an NCAA schedule just like every other team. But none of that matters because they will not play for the National Championship and no one will ever know if they could have gone the distance.
The BCS is a joke. How anyone could agree with it, baffles me. Why can’t the NCAA just conform to the normal rules of sports? You play a regular season and you are placed in a tournament at the end of the season and ranked according to your performance. From there, the best team wins.
