 The Pete Report
Are we already done recruiting the Class of 2011?

Wait – I know a few of you love the melodrama at the end of the OSU process (hah!) but I say we wrap this baby up early and start obsessing about 2012, already. We have argued ad nauseum and ad infinitum about the differing philosophies in recruiting. Some schools bring in hundreds of kids and make offers to half of them and over-sign to beat the band. Texas brought in 30 recruits on official visits last year and offered all 30 and got 25. This year? Texas already has 13 commitments and Ohio State has yet to hold a proper Junior Day.

Ohio State’s typical year is to use a rifle-shot mentality, offer very few, hope for the best, get in a number of early targets and start explaining away early why the national five-star guys jilt us in the end. Harrumph…

So, maybe this year will be markedly different. We are in on a bunch of kids, have made an unusual amount of offers and have what shapes up to be a bountiful harvest right here in the Buckeye State. And we seem to be done almost at a few positions, already. At least strategically. Take a look:

Defensive end: We already have the best pair maybe ever to play at the same time in Ohio (no, really…) in Steve Miller and Kenny Hayes. Either one could be a five-star recruit if they had waited and strung along the recruiting services. But they both committed early to Ohio State and we are likely done at defensive end and – if not – we can “Chase” Farris on his day off up in Elyria. Wait – we just offered two more Florida defensive ends: Anthony Chickillo and Aaron Lynch!

Safety: That’s Tanner and Cash, the sequel. Ron Tanner is a huge Buckeye lean and Jeremy Cash is as much of a lean as a Florida guy can be (I know, I know…).

Quarterback: We will get Braxton Miller. We will get Cardale Jones. We are still in on Teddy Bridgewater. Hey – how greedy are you, anyway?

Offensive line: We are in on Aundrey Walker and Michael Bennett (could be D-line as well) and Chris Carter (no, not a legacy) and Brian Bobeck looks like the center of attention for the future.

The Glenville guys: I already said we have Cardale when we want him. We also have mammoth Aundrey Walker to shore up the O-line and Shane Wynn, Teddy Ginn Jr. Junior. (A small sized version but with all the excitement). And there’s still Andre Sturdivant, a heckuva linebacker.

Other Buckeye strong leans: Well, we are hoping for Ben Koyack as we need at least two tight ends and he is as good as any other two out there. Doran Grant could be a three-year starter at cornerback and legacy Evan Spencer (WR) seems “inevitable”. DerJuan Gambrell feels like an Ohio DB we really want. As are Wayne Lyons and Damian Swann from the South, And I also feel pretty good about Trey DePriest (especially if Braxton commits early…) and we can have Nick Vannett at tight end in the end.

That’s probably 23 out of a class of probably 22 or so. Whew. That seems a lot more like Mississippi State than it does Texas. And seems like two years of offers for the traditional Buckeye “model”!

But to play the game, this year’s out-of-state obsession might be James Vaughters who could be the Jordan Hicks we didn’t get. The presumed #1 linebacker in the country was here on visits early last year, his folks are from Ohio and he is rumored to be Andre Amos’s cousin.

If you are keeping score at home, we would still need two linebackers, a defensive tackle and maybe another DB on defense and a wide receiver and two more offensive linemen on offense.

That is all.

Now, let’s not talk about it for a couple of weeks. Oh, who am I kidding?
