CLEVELAND INDIANS MEMORIES.............GOING TO THE OLE BALLGAME

Sunday afternoon I was finally going to do it. I had put it off long enough and with my wife out of town, it was the perfect day to bring my daughters, Julia age four and Abby age seven to their first Indians game downtown Cleveland at beautiful Jacobs Field. Before we left, Abby decided it would be a good idea if we brought some snacks with us to the game. She proudly put some fruit snacks, cookies and juice boxes into a brown paper bag for her and her sister to enjoy during the game. The weather early in the morning was overcast and dark but as 11AM approached, things took a turn for the better as the sun was shining brightly, as we hopped into the car and jumped on route 45 and headed west. The girls were excited as I talked about how beautiful Jacobs Field was and how much fun we were going to have at the game today. The drive downtown seemed like forever as we made our way behind Cooperstown restaurant, which was my usual parking place when going down to the Jake. I had scored two lower box seats on the first base side for the game against the Oakland A’s courtesy of Dana Schulte, my boss at Clear Channel Radio. While the seats were pretty decent, I yearned to get something much closer to home plate, so the girl’s first taste of major league baseball would be very memorable and exciting. Luckily I knew a few of the regular scalpers that hung out by Cooperstown and while we lunched on burgers and fries at the restaurant, I knew my chances of getting better seats would be greater if I waited up until game time or even a little after. When we finished eating it was about 1PM and the first pitch was only minutes away. My philosophy was right on as I upgraded our seats considerably making a deal with a scalper named “Butch” shortly after. I traded our lower box tickets along with some cash and in return received two field box seats that were ten rows right behind home plate. Now we were in business as we walked across the street to the Jake. I walked the girls to the turnstile right next to the media gate and they handed their tickets to the ticket taker and I flashed my handy dandy Clear Channel media pass and within seconds the three of us were standing inside Jacobs Field. Both Julia and Abby’s face said a thousand beautiful words as they just looked around and stared in awe at the beautiful ballpark and its surroundings as we held hands and started the walk to our seats. When we found our great seats right behind home plate, the game was in the second inning and the A’s were winning 1-0. We sat down and again luck was on our side as our seats were the last two in our row and were directly on the aisle. Abby and Julia shared a seat at first and after an inning Julia came and set on my lap. Both girls asked numerous great questions about the field, scoreboard, players and everything else going on around them. The only player that they knew or even heard of was Omar Visquel, who was the only remaining link to the glory days a few years ago, that now seems a lifetime away. But the girl’s favorite part of the park and the game was none other than Slider, the big purple mascot himself. Whenever he appeared in person or on the scoreboard their eyes lit up and they demanded to know where he was at that given time. They did watch some of the game, but honestly were getting somewhat bored by the fifth inning with the score now tied at a boring 1-1. I knew I had to act immediately or they would remember their first trip to the Jake as non-eventful or even boring. I suggested a walk to Kids Land and the Kids Team Shop. And after a quick bathroom break, that was exactly where we were headed. Things started to immediately perk up, as the girls were both given animal balloons at Kids Land, which is located in the outfield area in the main concourse. Now we were having some real fun as the girls played on some of the toys and even made a couple of friends. I even looked up to the concession stand there and noticed numerous kid’s items for sale such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and corn dogs at noticeably lower prices then at general concession stands located in the stadium. Slider also appeared out there at Kids land and after the girl’s high- fived and greeted Slider warmly, we made our way into the Kids Team shop. By now both girls were totally glowing and they were ready to shop. We browsed our way through the store and both girls decided that they wanted an Indians stuffed animal toy with Julia selecting the Tribe doggie and Abby the Tribe monkey. Both stuffed animals were $9.95 and I paid the cashier twenty one dollars and some change and both girls were smiling from ear to ear as they each carried their balloon and animal around their necks and on their heads as we headed back to our seats. My quick thinking had probably saved the day. It was the seventh inning when returned to our seats and both girls had a fruit snack and drink box as Omar turned an inning ending double play and the crowd jumped up and roared. Abby and Julia were very much more into the game and cheered and clapped loudly when the home team did something well. In between the inning the crowd of 24,000 plus started doing the wave and the three of us stood with our arms up whenever the wave came to our area. The girls loved the wave and Julia mentioned that she felt like we were at Conneaut Lake Park riding her favorite roller coaster. In the eighth inning, Oakland jumped out ahead 3-2 on some sloppy play by the Tribe, which led to another bullpen blunder, which has been the same saga over and over again all season. With Julia becoming more tired in the bottom of the inning, we decided to head for the car much to the dismay of Abby who wanted to stay until the game was over because she was sure that she would be able to run the bases, which she had done last season at a Lake County Captains game. When we arrived at the gate to leave located by the bleachers, the three of us stopped and turned to look at the beautiful field one last time. Abby said, “Thanks Dad, I had a great time today” as I looked at Julia who was nodding her little head in agreement. I almost melted on the spot as I caught myself wiping a tear from my eye when I looked down at my little girls. I promised we would return again real soon this season and we headed back to the car. We drove down a shortcut that I knew that took us to East 9th street and within minutes we were on the freeway headed for home. I tried to listen to the ninth inning on the radio, but to no avail because my AM antenna wasn’t working properly since a lightning storm we had damaged it last week As I was driving, I thought back some thirty years ago to when my father brought me to my first Indians game at Municipal Stadium and how wonderful it was when I walked in to that huge stadium the very first time at age six. I remembered exactly how my girls felt today seeing Jacobs Field the very first time. After a couple of minutes of daydreaming of George Hendrick, Oscar Gamble with those blood red softball shaped uniforms and the days of twi-night doubleheaders in 1974, I looked back to check on the girls. They were both sound asleep with their heads gently resting on their pillows. As I looked back at them holding their balloons and animals sound asleep, I realized that I would not have traded this day for anything in the world. These memories will last a lifetime. By the way, the Tribe did come from behind in the ninth inning and win the ballgame after we left. A perfect ending for a perfect day.
